Lydia Maria Child (1802 – 1880) was a true heroine of the abolitionist movement. After meeting William Lloyd Garrison in 1831 she gave up a promising literary career and her standing in society to battle slavery. She also advocated for equal rights for women, and for fair treatment of indigenous tribes. In her religious beliefs, she had been raised Calvinist, became a Unitarian, and then a free thinker.
