Architecture of downtown Amherst

September 13 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Few private buildings taller than three stories were built in Amherst’s central business district between 1885 and 2010. Since 2010 five-story mixed-use buildings were built in the downtown area. Spurred by changes to the building and zoning codes, a pent up demand for housing, these buildings have added about 350 new housing units downtown and thousands of square feet of street level commercial space. This talk will focus on the architecture of the old and the new buildings in the central business district.

Stephen Schreiber, FAIA is an architect and chair of the Department of Architecture at UMass Amherst. He is former member and chair of the Planning Board, a former member of the Town Council, and a member and former chair of the UMass campus planning committee. He is currently president of the National Architectural Accrediting Board.  He and his family have lived near downtown Amherst for two decades. In April 2024 he led a popular walking tour of downtown Amherst
