The Cold War in Amherst

November 8 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

The 1950’s can seem very far away, with their focus on the cold war with Russia and the potential for nuclear war. Local author and retired firefighter Joshua Shanley brings that time to life with his discussion of cold war preparedness in Western Massachusetts — he explores several historical sites, including the bunker on Military Road built in 1957, and the lesser-known “backyard bunker” on Pine Street, which he is currently investigating. Beyond Amherst, he documents hidden military and emergency infrastructures across Massachusetts, such as the tunnels under Westover Airport’s runway and the State Emergency Operations Center in Framingham, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.

Joshua Shanley was a firefighter-paramedic in both Amherst and Northampton for a combined 25 years, retiring in 2021. He is adjunct faculty for Purdue University Global Fire Science and Emergency Management program and now works for the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency. His first book, The Connecticut River Valley Flood of 1936, was published in 2021.
