The Old Grove at UMass

May 3 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

On a west-facing hill on the UMass campus, oak trees which sprouted 300 years ago are still growing — because of the steep slope the trees were never cut. One of the black birch trees in the grove is recognized as one of the largest trees of that species in Massachusetts. The area has been recognized by the Massachusetts Historical Commission as an historic landscape.

Last fall, local nature lover Elisa Campbell led a popular walking tour to this grove of old growth trees. In this talk Ms Campbell will summarize the guiding talk she gave during that hike.
